The Urban Club for Ukrainian youth 'I am in the city' in Warsaw is a joint project of the Ukrainian House, the Western NIS Enterprise Fund (WNISEF), and the public organization 'Child's Effect.' The main goal of the club is to provide its participants with essential practical knowledge about cities – Polish, Ukrainian, and others. The initiator and co-organizer of the club is Iryna Ozymok, an expert at WNISEF on local economic development, founder of the international mayors' summit, and author of a children's book about how the city functions and the role of individuals in it. The Urban Club 'I am in the city' in Poland was implemented in Lublin and Warsaw.
"Today, millions of Ukrainian children live in different countries. Our goal is to strengthen their connection to their hometowns by generating ideas on how to improve them upon their return. We analyzed their experience in Warsaw: infrastructure, environmental, and people-centric solutions that could serve as an example for many Ukrainian cities and communities. We felt the strong love children have for their cities and how beneficial, despite the difficulties, the experience of living here in Warsaw has become," says Iryna Ozymok about the club.
The club included five thematic events with invited experts. During the meetings, participants discussed topics such as nature in the city, sustainable development, with a focus on what strategies modern cities should adopt considering environmental preservation for future generations; business as a crucial aspect of urban development; and the reconstruction of schools as safe, creative, ecological, and barrier-free spaces. Participants analyzed examples of interaction in cities, studied interesting initiatives, and, most importantly, developed and proposed their own solutions to improve their cities.
